Planting the town green on I-Day

Techie Dheeraj Kumar and volunteers will celebrate Independence Day by planting 300 saplings in Marathalli and HMT Layout

GAYATRI NAIR

Independence Day is not just an another holiday for software engineer Dheeraj Kumar M. He wants to celebrate it by planting 300 saplings and restore some green cover in Bangalore.

On Saturday, Kumar along with volunteers, will plant 100 saplings in Marathalli and another 200 in and around HMT Layout. Kumar said, “Trees are being felled to make roads and other infrastructure. The City has almost lost the Garden City tag. Hence, I want to compensate by planting more saplings.”

This is not the first time he’s planting saplings. On July 11, he planted about 500 saplings in the Vishwa Santhi Ashram in Nelamangala. Kumar added, “There are many benefits of planting saplings. It strengthens the soil and obviously reduces pollution. And what better way to celebrate Independence Day.”

JOINING FORCES

Saturday’s spot for planting saplings was recommended to Kumar by his colleague Apoorv Jain, who lives in the apartment complex SJR Spencer on Varthur Road, Marathalli.

The place chosen is a small plot of land behind the apartment complex. Planting will take place from 8 am with the children of families living in the apartments taking part.

“Later when the children will play in the garden they will see the plants and remember to water them,” added Kumar. Residents of the apartments are extremely supportive of this initiative.

All the saplings for Saturday’s planting are provided for free by Isha Foundation, said M Rajesh Kumar, a software engineer who works with it.

Dheeraj has also started a blog www.grow-trees.blogspot.com to create more awareness about planting.

Here you go..... :) :) :)

Digging in for a green future

After doing nine hours of night shift, 90 BPO employees from the city travelled to Nelamangala to plant saplings

-- This is an article that is published in Bangalore Mirror.
http://epaper.timesofindia.com/Repository/ml.asp?Ref=QkdNSVIvMjAwOS8wNy8xMiNBcjAwNTAw&Mode=HTML&Locale=english-skin-custom

BPO employees are sometimes maligned as spendthrift youngsters who get too much too soon. Some people see them as 20-somethings zipping around the town in cabs to swanky offices at odd hours of the day and night, spending their weekends in merrymaking.

They would have changed their opinion if they had seen what happened on Saturday morning. After finishing their night shift, 90 BPO employees left the plush air conditioned offices of Aditya Birla MINACS near the Outer Ring Road and travelled to Nelamangala.

By afternoon, they had managed to plant over 200 saplings in the fields of Vishwa Shanthi Ashram.

Each group took about half an hour to plant a sapling against the 10 minutes a seasoned hand would have taken. But not a bad effort considering that they are people who rarely step out to work with their hands.

The employees were carrying spades and getting their hands dirty, egging each other on. “Tum jaise khod rahi ho, shaam ho jayega!” “Must it be 2 feet? There are no rules, yaar!” “Use the crowbar da.” “Yeh to new age farmer lag raha hai” were the quips flying. Most of them were sweating and some chose to go shirtless.

One employee said, “This is not tough, I come from an agricultural background.” Another one added, “It is a pleasure, we hardly ever get to do this sort of work.”

The first group to plant a sapling of “peepal” named their plant “Minpal”.

SITES SCARCE

But why plant saplings so far from the city? “I spoke to many people about land for planting the saplings. At Vishwa Shanti Ashram, the people told me they would provide land for the saplings and look after them,” said Dheeraj Kumar M, a software engineer.

He got the saplings for free from the Isha Foundation’s Project GreenHands, which seeks to reverse environmental degradation and enable sustainable living. Banking extensively on people’s participation, the foundation is aiming to plant 114 million trees state-wide by the year 2010.

Of the 500 saplings ready to be planted, there were 250 Hoo Arasu plants while the rest were kumulu, Flame of the Forest, Singapore Cherry and Saracca Indica saplings.

Rajesh, co-ordinator of Project GreenHands, said the project planted 14,000 saplings in Bangalore last year. This year, it targets to plant 3,000 saplings within the city and on the outskirts

A brief study.....

These days, the modernization of Bangalore has become inevitable. The City is growing in all directions.
As the city grows, the people coming into city has increased. With this it becomes inevitable to grow interms of

1. Infrastructure of the city in terms of Metro Train, fly over
2. Shelters, interms of number of apartments
3. various industries
4. Number of vehicles (private/ taxi/ etc)

and the list grows on...

To cater to this, there has been no option but to cut the trees in the city. The trees are indispensables part of the city, which hold the synonym as "Garden city of India". But now slowly the name is diminishing and causing lot of side effects interms of

- natural calamity
- Temperature of the city
- pollution
- health of the citizen

I am herewith you requesting to take action to reduce the side effects. One of the ways is to plant trees.

Planting Trees
* absorb the Carbon dioxide
* provide beauty to the city
* strengthens the Ground
* helps in proper rain at the proper time
* gives shelter

and the benefit list grows on ...

And, time has come which no better than any, which is the beginning of rainy season. I request you to plant trees in every of your house. Those who staying in apartment, villa, layout, please contact your land owner/ builder and enroll them to this cause. Along with having pets at your house, please have a small plant, nurture it and contribute for the global cause.

Please feel free to get in touch with me to have more details if you need.

Welcome Note

A Warm welcome to everyone.. :)
